Camping at a campground has it's advantages and disadvantages over camping on your own.

Campgrounds provide some extra "luxuries"

that you might not have on your own, such as:

  • Restrooms
  • Water
  • Wireless Internet access
  • Picnic tables
  • Knowing you'll have a spot if you make reservations
  • Access to some areas, such as in some National Parks, that you couldn't camp in otherwise

The campground benefits comes with some downsides too, though:

  • Crowds
  • Cost:  Camping on your own is usually free, campgrounds are not
  • Less freedom to roam around, since you are surrounded by other campers
